On the evening of September 6, a representative of Viettel confirmed that the current Internet connection from Vietnam to the world is being affected by two simultaneous submarine cable incidents.

In particular, Asia America Gateway (AAG), a cable route directly connecting Southeast Asia with the US, encountered a problem for the second time this year on July 19, on the S1H segment from the Vung Tau docking station. international axis, disrupting all international connection services on this cable route.

By August 20, the problem that occurred on July 19 on the AAG cable line had been repaired and overcome. However, due to another error on the S1B segment from Hong Kong to Singapore on August 11, only the AAG capacity to Hong Kong was restored, the Vietnam-Singapore AAG capacity continued to be lost.

The cause of a new incident on the AAG cable route since mid-August has been determined to be a cable fault in the S1B segment. The management unit of the sea cable route has sent ships to repair and it is expected that the cable fault will be fixed on September 26.

According to preliminary assessment, the cause of the problem that occurred on September 4 on the AAE-1 cable is due to a source leak at two different points of the S1H segment. Currently, Internet service providers (ISPs) in Vietnam have not received notice of this repair and troubleshooting schedule. While AAG capacity from Vietnam to Singapore has not been restored, in the morning. On September 4, another undersea cable, Asia Africa Europe 1 (AAE-1), also had a problem on the S1H segment – the backbone between Cambodia and Thailand. This incident disrupted the connection capacity from Vietnam to Singapore and Europe on the AAE-1 cable route.

According to experts, undersea cable incidents do not affect domestic Internet connection, access to domestic websites and applications is not affected (Artwork).

A representative of Viettel said that at the same time, a force majeure incident occurred on two undersea cable routes, locally affecting the quality of access of a group of customers.

However, this operator also noted that the problem on international undersea cables only affects the speed of accessing international websites at some times of the day. Access to domestic websites and applications is not affected.

In the past, there have been several times when more than one undersea cable line had problems. In that situation, according to experts, of course Internet users will see the impact, especially when using bandwidth-intensive services such as video, online TV, but the source of the content is abroad. The group of users who feel the impact most clearly are individual users and households, because this is the group that uses bandwidth-intensive entertainment services.

In order to minimize the impact of the undersea cable incident on the quality of international Internet services provided to customers, network operators have implemented response plans, shifting capacity to other undersea cable directions and routes. cable on land.

Specifically, with Viettel, this operator said that it has rerouted and optimized traffic through other undersea cable routes such as TGN-IA, APG; and land cable to connect internationally, and plan to add more capacity on APG and land cable to ensure that the service quality of customers is not affected.

CMC has moved capacity to other cable directions, including Southeast Asia (A-Grid) cable direction connected to the Internet from Vietnam through Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. VNPT has also optimized and aligned traffic to ensure services for customers.

The network operators are currently continuing to coordinate and work with the Management Board and operate the AAG and AAE-1 undersea cable routes to have continuous updates on the above incident repair plan.
