After a period of investigation, the police identified the main suspect of the case as Xu Yao, the senior leader in charge of the film and television division of Yoozoo Games. Prior to that, Xu was an attorney trained in France and the US.

An unnamed internal source told Caixin that the latest details of the case are like the plot of a murder movie. Representatives for Yoozoo and Xu Yao’s legal team have yet to respond to Caixin’s request for comment.

It is known that Xu is haunted by “Breaking Bad”, the film revolves around a high school chemistry teacher who becomes a drug lord. Xu built his own poison production laboratory in Qingpu District, Shanghai. Later, Xu bought more than 100 types of poison on the dark web and regularly tested it on dogs, cats and many other pets. After learning about the poison, Xu made a plan to poison the target in real life.

Xu was accused of preparing and giving a vial containing 30 probiotic pills mixed with the poison pills and transferred to Lin through the victim’s secretary. A few days after use, Lin took the poisonous tablet and developed nausea. He was hospitalized and died after 10 days.

Xu is a seasoned legal expert and has refused to plead guilty ever since. To date, more details in the case have been uncovered, including Xu purchasing and manufacturing the poison. Even so, the investigation is still underway for clearer evidence.

Several sources in the gaming industry told Caixin that not knowing any debt or personal relationship outside of work prompted Xu to take such action. Xu’s motive for the crime remains a mystery.

Xu was born in 1981, studied law in China before studying and graduated in insurance law at a French university in 2006. In 2008, Xu attended the University of Michigan law school and then worked in the department. Legal of Fosun famous financial group for nearly 10 years. In 2017, Xu joined Yoozoo Games. People commented that Xu is professional and quiet. In 2018, Xu became a senior director of a subsidiary of Yoozoo Games. The position was then reassigned to Zhao Jilong, the company’s Vice President associated with Yoozoo’s “Three-Body” project.

According to Caixin, apart from Lin, Zhao and another person working in Yoozoo’s online games division were also poisoned. Tests showed that Zhao was slowly contaminated with mercury and that the toxin content in Zhao’s blood was 10 times higher than normal. After the treatment, Zhao is expected to be discharged from the hospital in the near future.

A source close to Yoozoo told Caixin that Xu and Zhao were not on good terms. They were always in a competitive position during the implementation of the “Three-Body” project.

Details of Zhao’s poisoning have not been made public as it has caused more widespread insecurity within the company, prompting many top executives to go for poison testing since Lin’s death.
