The company behind the camera technology on Nokia 9 PureView suddenly left the smartphone market

After stepping into the mobile industry with the L16 push in 2015, Light unexpectedly announced he was withdrawing from the industry.

This decision is not too difficult to understand when the L16 is not as successful as Nokia 9 PureView. Even after the launch of L16, Light also cooperated with both Xiaomi and Sony.

Light is said to have been involved in the development of Xiaomi’s smartphone camera and image sensor for Sony. However, it was unclear after Light withdrew from the market, whether or not the partnership remained.

At the time of its launch, Light had a huge ambition in the smartphone market, but its limited capacity and poor communication capability quenched all of its ambitions.

Light’s approach is to use a combination of sensors to collect image data, thereby creating a final image with extremely high detail. On Nokia 9 PureView, the 5-camera cluster developed by Nokia and Light will work together. Specifically, the dual 12MP camera cluster will combine with a trio of 12MP monochrome cameras. Of course every camera uses a different type of lens.

Raw data will continue to be processed by software, then create blocks and produce images with better dynamic range, colors and details. Although it demers respectable image quality compared to a smartphone. But of course this camera cluster is not always good because post processing requires an extremely powerful processing power and is very complex so sometimes errors can occur.

After withdrawing from the smartphone market, Light will likely continue to focus on developing camera technology but will be applied in self-driving cars. Light 3D camera system will help the car can feel the surroundings and give the most accurate feedback, such as lane keeping, obstacle avoidance or emergency braking.
