Founded in February 1995 as a battery manufacturer, BYD is now present in more than 30 industrial parks around the world. BYD is an important player in electronics, automotive, new energy and rail transit.

According to Forbes, the Chinese electric vehicle maker’s net profit, invested by billionaire Warren Buffett, jumped 206% year-on-year to 3.6 billion yuan, or about $530 million. The company’s revenue also increased 65.7% from the first half of 2021 to 150.6 billion yuan.

In the first half of this year, the Chinese electric-car maker became the world’s top-selling electric car maker, surpassing billionaire Elon Musk’s Tesla giant. BYD sold 641,350 electric vehicles in the first six months of 2022, while Tesla sold 564,740 vehicles.

BYD’s competitiveness in the electric vehicle market comes in part from its in-house supply of core components, including selected batteries and semiconductors, as well as the company’s early focus on electric vehicles. .

On September 8, the Chinese electric car maker signed a land purchase agreement with WHA Corp, Thailand’s largest industrial real estate company, to build the first electric vehicle factory in Southeast Asia. .

Once the plant comes into operation, annual production capacity will reach about 150,000 vehicles, both companies revealed. The WHA notes that by 2030, electric vehicles are expected to account for 30% of Thailand’s total car production – or 700,000 vehicles per year.

Over the last year, BYD has made several announcements about selling electric passenger cars to countries such as Brazil, Australia, Singapore and Norway.

Unlike some high-priced Tesla models, BYD models come in a variety of price points. BYD said it stopped making diesel vehicles in March and is instead focusing on battery-powered and hybrid vehicles. From April 2021, all BYD pure electric vehicles will use the company’s self-developed “Blade” battery, which was first installed on the company’s popular Han sedan.
