Tesla ‘rightly admits wrong’: The steering wheel falling off the car is not a fault, accepting compensation for ‘respecting’ customers

More than a week ago, the social network was flooded with information about a Tesla customer who lost his steering wheel while driving. Now, it seems that the above story has a happy ending but also causes a lot of confusion. Tesla does not consider a car’s steering wheel fall to be a defect or a covered condition.

Specifically, the owner of the car, nicknamed Preneh24 on Twitter, bought a new Tesla and drove it for about a week – before the car’s steering wheel fell off. He contacted Tesla’s service center and initially received a quote of $103.96 to fix the problem. He then asked Tesla for a refund or a replacement Model Y.

To date, Tesla has contacted and offered to pay the repair fee. Besides, they also agreed to take back the Model Y and provide him with a brand new one. The strange thing is that in the letter allegedly sent to him by Tesla, they said that ” the car is not defective, there is no warranty and Tesla does not accept any liability for this “.

Before this answer of “going into the ground” of Tesla, the Carscoops site questioned whether the steering wheel falling off during driving is not a fault, then what is considered the fault of the car.

In the letter to the owner, Tesla also said that ” as a gesture of goodwill towards you – as an important Tesla customer… Tesla agrees to buy back the car “. It should be noted that the repair bill posted by Preneh24 shows that Tesla apparently “replaced or added” the steering column retaining pin to the steering column.

This part, codenamed 1036655-00-A, appears to be the main problem. The drawing shows that it is directly responsible for attaching the steering wheel to the steering column. In the photo posted by the owner of the car, one does not see a single bolt. It’s not clear if this latch was dropped or if it was never fitted to the vehicle.

Carscoops said it contacted Tesla but did not expect to hear back because the company has no official communications department.
