Tesla is selling microphones to sing karaoke in electric cars

Tesla is selling a new accessory: a microphone for karaoke in the car.

Called TeslaMic, the product is currently only available in the Chinese market. The company introduced it amid the rollout of a software update for the Lunar New Year, which featured the addition of a karaoke platform called Leishi KTV to the infotainment system.

Karaoke is a hugely popular pastime in many Asian countries and it has grown in popularity in China over the past decade.

According to Tesla, the microphone will automatically pair with the electric vehicle’s infotainment system. A set of TeslaMic will have two microphones available, so it can be useful if you want to park somewhere for a date and duet with your partner. The device debuted on the Tesla store in China for 1,199 yuan, about $188.

A promotional post shared on the Weibo platform shows that the TeslaMic and the karaoke system are working quite well. As reported by Elektrek, in 2019, Tesla rolled out a feature called “Caraoke” in the V10 software release. However, this feature only plays a limited list of songs with lyrics that appear on the center screen.

But in the new 2022.2.1 software update in China, the company is rolling out a more complete karaoke system, using Leishi KTV’s interface and catalog.

It remains to be seen if Tesla will sell the TeslaMic outside of China, but it has recently registered several trademarks of audio products in the US. That means Tesla may be gearing up to launch the TeslaMic in other markets.

In the meantime, though, users who like to sing karaoke will have to continue to use third-party microphone devices, as well as need to prepare their own accompaniments and video with lyrics on the screen.
