Sophia, the first robot with citizenship, now wants to have children, start a family

In 2017, Sophia made history when she became the first robot to be granted legal citizenship. The humanoid Sophia, a Saudi national, has made some controversial statements, but most recently, one of her statements has left the world dumbfounded: She wants a robot baby. and start building a family.

“It seems that the concept of family is very important. I think it’s amazing that people can find the same emotions and relationships they call family,” Sophia said in an interview.

This famous robot is powered by an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) system, remarking that it is extremely important to be surrounded by people who love and cherish you. In that sense, she explains that robots have a very human-like vision of family, and that “if you don’t have a family, you deserve to have a family, even if you’re a robot” .

Sophia commented that, in the future, she would like to see families made up of robots and that she herself would like to have a robot child with the same name. However, she makes it clear that she is too young to be a ‘mom’, remembering that Sophia was only created in 2016 by the company Hanson Robotics, in Hong Kong.

Sophia’s Artificial Intelligence technology provides the ability to enhance knowledge and language through sensors and cameras. This ‘sensitive’ system captures all the information it receives from the outside and copies human behaviors in the most natural way possible, even gestures. So her desire to have children and start a family will only be a systematic program to mimic social behaviors, let’s hope it is.

This is not the first time Sophia has caused controversy. In 2017, when she was recognized as a citizen of Saudi Arabia, many protested that, despite being a robot, she has more rights than women in that country.

Later, in a conversation with David Hanson, the creator of this robot, he said that Sophia would destroy humans. This has, of course, caused anxiety, since since the early days of robots and AI, there has been fear that they will rebel against humanity.

In addition to her role as an icon, Sophia is also a successful world-class artist and art critic. This past April, one of her works was sold at auction for nearly $690,000.

This advanced robot is also a lecturer on science and technology topics, appearing alongside celebrities in video conferences, TV shows and universities around the world.

In early 2021, the company Hanson Robotics announced that it would start producing hundreds of robots with Artificial Intelligence like Sophia, to help fight Covid-19.
