A joint venture led by Sony has launched a new service called S.Ride in Tokyo, Japan. Japan is a special market, where other car rental services do not arrive. That’s why Sony suddenly launched a car call app that is considered a very interesting move.
The S.Ride application was launched and operated by Minna no Taxi, which was founded last year by Sony Payment Services, Sony Corp. Minna no Taxi is also a taxi company, will cooperate with 6 other car companies to provide a total of 10,000 vehicles to serve people in Tokyo.
In fact, S.Ride is not an application for hitchhiking like Uber, but a taxi call application. Passengers can pay by cash, credit card or QR Code via electronic wallet. In Japan, car rental services are considered illegal, so Uber must also act as a taxi call application in Tokyo.

Sony said the “S” in S.Ride is not representative of the name of this Japanese corporation. Instead, “S” means “Simple, Smart, and Speedy” (simple, smart and fast). Sony said the S.Ride application uses artificial intelligence to predict which areas will have the highest demand and control the number of vehicles reasonably.
S.Ride is not the first application of this type in Japan, previously had a Line application with a similar feature (although it stopped the service last year). Meanwhile, Uber’s presence in Japan is still very limited, so the potential of Sony’s new application development is huge.
