According to Sony China, at the annual shareholders meeting held last Friday, shareholders approved a proposal to change the company’s name to Sony Group. The new name will be effective from April 2021.

Sony is a multinational corporation based in Japan, whose main business is electronic products. Sony was founded in 1946, by Jing Shenda and Shoda Morita.

This is the first time Sony changed its name in more than 60 years. The name change to Sony Group will help change the brand positioning and open up new businesses. Previously, Sony’s core business was electronics, but the Japanese company intends to expand into finance and investment.

“We decided to change our company’s name to Sony Group, because we want to leverage the diversity of our business portfolio to drive growth,” said Sony CEO Yoshida Kenichiro .

Many people may not know it, but Sony’s original name was not Sony, but Tokyo Telecommunications Industry Co. This rather complicated name was changed to Sony in 1958. At that time, co-founder Shoda Morita had the ambition to make Sony a global brand, not just limited to Japan.
