OpenAI CTO: New version of ChatGPT will be like a private tutor

Tram Ho

The technology world is anxiously waiting for OpenAI to release GPT-4, an upgrade of GPT-3.5, the language processing model currently running ChatGPT.

AI experts in Silicon Valley think that GPT-4 will be a big step forward, as it is trained on hundreds of billions of parameters and data, many times more than GPT-3. More parameters will allow AI to collect more data from the internet. Thus, theoretically, the data should have higher accuracy.

But Mira Murati, Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, doesn’t want this. “I think a little less hype would be better,” Murati said. Murati’s comments come as there are rumors about the release date and capabilities of GPT-4.

Others even believe that GPT-4 could lead to “general artificial intelligence” or AGI. This is the term for an AI that can understand and learn every human thinking task. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman thinks this is not possible. “The GPT-4 rumor is ridiculous,” Altman said in an interview with SeriousVC.

Rumor has it that Microsoft’s new Bing search engine will run on GPT-4. However, these rumors were quickly debunked after Microsoft announced that they were using the GPT-3.5 model, a tweaked version of the GPT-3 model.

Despite the speculation surrounding how this model will be difficult to grasp and control, Murati thinks that the GPT-4 can “expand opportunities for everyone”.

Referring to the controversy surrounding the use of ChatGPT in schools, Murati said that GPT-4 will help teachers have fun and use chatbots as a tool to help prepare lesson plans. Instead of before, they are often disgruntled and believe that this AI chatbot encourages fraud, plagiarism and can take their jobs.

“With ChatGPT, you can have limitless interactions and help you in new ways based on different contexts. This tool will be like a personal tutor,” Murati shared.

Currently, GPT-4 is still being kept secret and OpenAI refuses to disclose the release date. “It will come out at some point, when we are confident we can do it safely and responsibly,” said Sam Altman.
