Only with a piece of pavement paper, Tencent’s security research room successfully hacked Tesla

This is not the first time Keen Lab has found a security hole in Tesla cars.

The hacker group in China has just found a way to fool Tesla very simply: with the stickers on the road that are calculated in a calculated way, they lure the Tesla Model S into the wrong lane. This method is implemented by Keen Lab, one of the leading technology security research groups in the world.

Not only one, but they also discovered two ways to attack the lane identification system of the Tesla self-driving system.

First, they seek to change the markers on the pavement, by placing stickers on the lane divider to make it blur in front of the identification camera. The test proved this method to be effective, but according to security researchers, sticking paper on the dividing line is very obvious, not to mention this is a clear offense.

So researchers created “fake lanes”. They discovered that Tesla’s autopilot system would detect the lane if three small stickers were found in a calculated way on the road.

When they put the stickers at an intersection, they anticipated that the Tesla would receive the wrong patch as a sign that it was still on the right track. On the test run, Tesla’s self-driving system went wrong, just as security researchers planned.

Our experiment demonstrates that the system has a security vulnerability and shows that counterclockwise identification is one of the most important elements of the self-driving race ,” Keen Lab’s research report stated.

In the test we set up, if the car knows the lane it is going to lead to a one-way street, it will know that this is a fake lane to not enter, to avoid causing an accident .”

To gain control of the steering wheel, security researchers have to go through a series of complicated steps to get into the system. It is worth noting that when they hack the system, they are sitting right on the car; besides, the hack cannot succeed when the car starts running at speeds above 8 km / h. However, when the vehicle is running Cruise Control support mode, the hacking takes place “without obstacles”.

To take control of the … wipers, the researchers seem to be working harder: They have to trick the Tesla so that it believes it is raining. The fake lane to go wrong is easy, but according to Keen Lab, changing the sun into a little hard rain.

You can see the video about the entire hacking process here.

This is not the first time Keen Lab has found a problem with Tesla’s security system. In 2016, there were times when they found a way to take control of the brakes.

Last March, at the CanSecWest security fair, there was a challenge to hack Tesla cars with prizes of up to $ 900,000. Only one team found the gap: two security researchers, Richard Zhu and Amat Cama, hacked the browser on the car, giving it the content they wanted.

Two hackers left with $ 35,000 in bags and Tesla cars.
