Next-generation AirPods are equipped with a light sensor that helps track wearer’s health in real time

According to a report by MacRumors, Apple is testing the integration of light sensors for AirPods and AirPods Pro headphones. The ASL ambient light sensor may appear on AirPods in the next 1-2 years. ASE Technology Co., Ltd. in Taiwan, China will be responsible for manufacturing these sensors.

The new sensor will have a biometric measurement role, as part of a health monitoring feature, that Apple wants to integrate into AirPods. The technology developed by ASE Technology can help the device monitor heart rate, blood oxygen level, footsteps, head movements and even real-time translation.

However, the two most important features can be heart rate and blood oxygen levels from the ear. Current sensors measure the amount of oxygen in the blood, working by shining red and infrared light through the blood vessels, measuring the volume of oxygen based on the amount of light transmitted. This sensor can also be used to measure pulse.

The problem is that to be able to measure that way, a light absorption sensor on the other side is needed. Therefore, with the current design of AirPods and AirPods Pro, it is difficult to do so. So most likely, Apple may change the design or launch a new line of AirPods specializing in health monitoring.
