Netflix will charge extra fees for users who have other people’s accounts

Just a few weeks after deciding to increase service prices in some regions, Netflix recently continued to make customers “sweat” with its latest plan: Review the action of sharing accounts between people. use, and there will be an additional fee if the users sharing the account are not members of the same family or do not live in the same house.

In a recent blog post, Chengyi Long, product creative director of Netflix, said: “ It is true that our strategy of sharing accounts in the same household is very popular, but it also generates a lot of money. misunderstanding in how to share a Netflix account. And as a result, many households can use the same account, seriously affecting our ability to invest in the production of new series .”

Netflix will charge extra fees for people who “use” other people’s accounts but do not live in the same house.

Netflix will conduct a trial of the new policy in 3 countries, including Chile, Costa Rica and Peru. Users can transfer existing profiles to another account, or to a sub-account, while keeping their watch history, favorite videos and personalized recommendations. In addition, each account can add up to 2 new profiles, for an additional fee of 3 USD (nearly 70,000 VND) in Chile and Costa Rica, and 2.12 USD (nearly 50,000 VND) in Peru.

In Vietnam, Netflix is deploying 4 different service packages, with prices of VND 70,000, VND 180,000, VND 220,000 and VND 260,000 respectively. In particular, the 260,000 VND package supports movies with resolutions up to 4K, which can be used on smartphones, tablets and TVs, as well as used on 4 different screens at the same time.

The price of using Netflix’s service has increased sharply in the past 3 years in some countries.

This is not the first time Netflix has taken measures to review and prevent account sharing that is against its policies. In 2021, the company tested an account authentication tool to filter users who “viewed” other people’s accounts without paying a fee.

Netflix’s new plan can be seen as an effort to help them maintain their position as the “king” of their movie streaming village, in the face of the very strong rise of many other platforms such as Disney +, HBO Max or Amazon Prime Video. To do that, Netflix needs to invest more heavily in its “homegrown” movie projects, or to put it simply, they need a lot more money to create products that are good enough to hold people back. use. And obviously, sharing passwords, uncontrolled accounts is one of the biggest obstacles that Netflix needs to solve to achieve its goals.
