NASA discovered unusual sand dunes on Mars

The data sent back also shows that the sand dunes here come in a variety of shapes and sizes. But the latest image shows some of the dunes are almost perfectly circular, and according to scientists this is “unusual”.

Mars is a dusty, sandy and windy planet. And that makes it a perfect place to form sand dunes. However, if we look closely we will see that these dunes are not perfect and exact circles.

“They’re still a bit asymmetrical, with sloping slides at the southern end. This suggests that the sand usually moves south, but the winds can change,” said planetary geologist Alfred McEwen.

The MRO’s HiRise camera system is currently controlled and operated from Earth, affiliated with the University of Arizona in the US. The MRO photographed these dunes at the end of November last year. Scientists are focusing on this area to track the seasonal changes of the dunes. This resulting image shows the typical frost-free area of ​​winter on Mars.
