MS DOS, the program that made Bill Gates wealthy, is being given by Microsoft for retirement

Tram Ho

After 36 years of existence, MS DOS is still used by programmers.

Before Microsoft had Office, and before Windows, people often knew the company through the operating system called MS DOS.

MS DOS is an operating system controlled by the command line, which means that the user must belong to a lot of commands and type them manually to control the system. It has remained on Windows versions for years. However, the fate of MS DOS is coming to an end.

Last month, Microsoft silently gave the 36-year-old MSD DOS application a “retirement” in the latest version of Windows 10 operating system released to the developer community (Windows Insiders). It is being replaced by a technology called PowerShell, a command line technology that has been around for 10 years. It is known that Windows users, especially developers, do not want MS DOS to be replaced by PowerShell.

MS DOS formation history

Few people know that MS DOS is what made Bill Gates and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen so rich.

The story is as follows: IBM was then building a new personal computer system using a chip, and it needed a separate operating system. IBM contacted a very famous person for building a small computer operating system at the time to negotiate. Legend has it that he was not at home because he was busy driving a plane (he was a pilot), so the meeting never happened. Another story said that the two sides met but ultimately failed to negotiate prices.

Therefore, IBM decided not to write a new operating system for this computer, instead they used a programming language called BASIC of an unpopular company at the time – Microsoft. Microsoft was famous after the incident.

Talking to IBM, Bill Gates heard that IBM needed an operating system, so he hired a creator of the MS DOS operating system. Rumors have it that Bill Gates paid him $ 75,000, but he sold it to IBM for $ 50,000, in exchange for Microsoft having the right to integrate MS DOS for other manufacturers.

And then the Microsoft empire was born. MS DOS operating system has become popular in many parts of the world, the PC industry step by step. Later, Bill Gates became the richest man in the world.
