More than 50% of Samsung smartphones will use Exynos chip next year

Tram Ho

Korean newspaper ET News reports that Samsung Electronics is pushing to “raise the proportion” of Exynos chipsets in Galaxy phones from 20% to 50% to 60%. ET News adds that Samsung’s LSI division will double its Exynos chipset shipments by 2022.

An industry source told ET News that Samsung has addressed the two main issues of Exynos with the next generation of chipsets: 5G connectivity and temperature.

ET News adds that the push for more Exynos chipsets mainly applies to mid-range and low-end smartphones. Most of Samsung’s recent low-cost phones use Snapdragon or Mediatek chipsets, so there’s definitely room for Exynos in this segment.

In fact, Samsung’s arguably best mid-range chipset, the Exynos 1080, doesn’t actually appear on any Galaxy smartphones (which are being used in Vivo phones). It is considered to be roughly on par with the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC and Snapdragon 780G.

As for the flagship, however, a leaker claimed in August that more markets will receive the Snapdragon version of the Galaxy S22, as the Exynos 2200 chipset will likely be in short supply.
