Mobile World Department lays off 7,000 employees: Because of the wrong numbers?

On the afternoon of February 8, talking to the reporter of Tien Phong newspaper, a representative of Mobile World Investment Joint Stock Company (stock code: MWG) said that there was no story of the company laying off 7,000 employees in the fourth quarter of 2022.

“There is a bit of confusion about the number of employees in the published financial statements,” said a representative of Mobile World.

Mobile World insists on not laying off personnel.

According to accurate data from the company’s human resources department, the number of employees of Mobile World as of September 2022 is 76,550 people; December 2022 is 74,008 people.

“The decrease in the number of employees is due to a natural fall, which means that the company temporarily stopped expanding so it did not recruit new employees, the old employees left due to personal desires and the company did not recruit replacements. The company will focus on optimizing labor productivity this year,” added a representative of Mobile World.

Previously, in the third quarter of 2022 consolidated financial statements, Mobile World recorded a total of 80,231 employees. Compared to the end of 2021, Mobile World’s staff size increased by about 14%. This is also the company’s highest number of employees ever in the retail sector.

At the end of 2022, Mobile World’s employee bonus is VND 1,565 billion, down 45% compared to the figures recorded at the beginning of the year. In the whole year of 2022, employee expenses reached VND 9,492 billion, down 2.2% over the same period.

Revenue reached more than 30,588 billion VND, down 15% compared to the fourth quarter of 2021. The profit after tax of Mobile World in the fourth quarter of 2022 reached VND 619 billion, down more than 60% over the same period. In the whole year of 2022, MWG achieved revenue of VND 134,722 billion, up 9% compared to 2021 but profit after tax decreased by 16%, reaching only VND 4,100 billion. Compared to the 2022 plan, Mobile World only achieved 95% of its revenue target and 65% of its profit target.

In terms of revenue structure for the whole year 2022, Dien May Xanh chain contributes up to 51.7% of Mobile World’s total revenue. Meanwhile, The Gioi Di Dong chain (including TopZone) and Bach Hoa Xanh chain contributed 26% and 20.3% of the company’s total revenue, respectively. Revenue from online sales accounted for 14% of Mobile World’s total revenue – the highest level ever.
