Microsoft will kill Flash Player on Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer by the end of 2020

Adobe plans to kill Flash Player in December 2020 and before that, most major browser publishers such as Google and Mozilla have confirmed they will stop supporting Flash Player in their browsers in the near future.

Microsoft is currently focusing on developing the new Microsoft Edge browser with Chromium and Microsoft has also outlined a roadmap for Flash Player to “retire” in the near future. Specifically, Microsoft will kill Flash Player on EdgeHTML Edge, Chromium and Internet Explorer versions.

Microsoft says that because the Chromium-powered Microsoft Edge browser uses the Chrome core, once Google stops supporting Flash Player, the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser will have to do the same.

The Flash Player death process will of course take place in stages and Flash will first be disabled and users will be required to enable it if they want to view content that requires the flash. The Flash Player will then be completely deleted sometime next year.

Microsoft also said it will not make any changes to Flash Player on the original Microsoft Edge browser this year. That means, this plugin deletion roadmap will start from 2020.

Microsoft representative said: “For versions of Microsoft Edge based on Edge HTML and Internet Explorer 11, the experience with flash will remain until the end of 2019. Specifically, they are not intended to disable the default flash on Microsoft. Edge will be using HTMLEdge or Internet Explorer 11 this year. However, we still plan to completely remove the flash from this browser by December 2020 as planned. “

All in all, Microsoft will begin to stop supporting flash on its browsers including Edge and IE by the end of 2020.
