Microsoft is about to kill Cortana on mobile

A Microsoft document revealed the company's plan to end the Cortana app's presence on iOS and Android in January of the following year.

The software maker has previously posted a new support article for Cortana users in the UK, Canada and Australia. This document shows that Cortana apps for iOS and Android will disappear at least in these markets. In addition, Microsoft also confirmed to The Verge that the Cortana application will no longer be available in Germany, Mexico, China, Spain and India markets from January 31 next year.

" Cortana is an integral part of our broader vision to bring the power of conversational computing and productivity to all our platforms and devices ." A Microsoft spokeswoman said in a statement sent to The Verge.

It's unclear how much longer this Cortana app will work on iOS and Android after January 31. A Microsoft spokesperson said only that it is currently supported in the US. The full note also reveals that Cortana will continue to disappear from Microsoft's Android Launcher application after January 31 in the aforementioned markets.

The Cortana application is also used to configure settings and update firmware for corporate devices such as Surface Headphones. But Microsoft didn't mention how Surface Headphone users in the UK and affected areas will access these features after Cortana disappears.

Introduced by Microsoft in 2015 on Android and iOS, Cortana was originally designed to connect Windows 10 computers to smartphones. Despite its redesign, Microsoft has failed to compete with other digital assistants in mobile and other fields. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed earlier this year that the company no longer sees Cortana as a competitor to Alexa and Google Assistant.
