Today, Microsoft confirmed that it no longer plans to continue developing and launching Windows 10X. The operating system was originally supposed to launch alongside dual-screen devices, like the Surface Neo, with a simpler interface and features. Windows 10X is dead, and Microsoft now plans to bring the best features of this operating system to Windows 10.

“Instead of launching Windows 10X in 2021 as originally planned, we are taking advantage of our experience in developing this operating system and pushing it forward ,” said John Cable, Director of Windows Service and Distribution. accelerate the integration of 10X’s foundational technologies into other components of Windows and our other products.”

Some of the foundational technologies of Windows 10X that will be integrated into Windows 10 are a more modern touch keyboard, more accurate voice input, and several other applications. Microsoft says it will still develop core Windows 10X technologies, with both software and hardware in the future. But that doesn’t mean we’ll see Surface Neo anytime soon.

Microsoft will change its strategy, turning Windows 10X into a lightweight version of Windows 10, to compete with Google’s Chrome OS. Microsoft has also spent years of effort developing a lighter version of Windows. Windows RT was first released with Surface tablets in 2012, then Windows 10 S launched in 2017, but both were unsuccessful.

Microsoft will launch a major update for Windows 10 in October. This major update will have interface changes, File Explorer improvements, and possibly additional Windows 10X features.
