Speaking of social networks, almost nobody knows Facebook, the largest social networking site in the world with over 55.8 billion dollars in 2018 revenue and 2.2 billion members have monthly activities. Of course, no one knows Facebook but forgot their founder, billionaire Mark Zuckerberg.
Mark’s life has made many people interested, not only because he holds the largest social network in the world but the career story of this young billionaire has inspired inspiration for countless entrepreneurs in the world.
Colorless Jewish boy full of talent
Born on May 14, 1984 in an old old town named Dobbs Ferry in New York. Mark Zuckerberg was Edward’s son and Karwn Zuckerberg, a dentist and a Jewish psychiatrist. Mark Zuckerberg has three brothers, sisters Randi, Donna and Arielle.
Although the current billionaire and king of the social network today, Mark’s family is not really rich. The place where he was born was just a small town and the hyperactive boy Mark had time to wonder about his beliefs before actually believing in Judaism.
Born with color blindness, only seeing the best with blue but Mark is a very good student. At the age of 12, Mark Zuckerberg developed a messaging software called Zucknet using Atari BASIC. He also programmed a computer game for his friends when he was very young.
While studying at the Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, Mark Zuckerberg developed a music streaming platform that both AOL and Microsoft showed interest in. However, Mark refused both the job offer and the acquisition of these big men. Here, Mark also won prizes in math, physics and science competitions.
He himself was a teenager who used three languages: French, Hebrew and Ancient Greek. Mark Zuckerberg was not a person who sat around his computer all day long. He loves reading classic literary works and is the captain of the high school fencing team.
Immediately after entering Harvard University in 2012, Mark was well-known as a talented programmer. His first product was “Face Mash”, a “hot” voting app for students from his study photos that he “hacked” in the school’s dormitory information management file. . Face Mash quickly received 22,000 views from 450 people in the first four hours of launch.
However, Harvard School Management quickly requested that this application be removed for security and copyright reasons. Mark himself faces allegations of violating privacy rights as well as the school’s security rules and facing the risk of expulsion. Fortunately, these allegations were canceled.
Despite that, Mark still built up the social networking site “The Facebook” in school in 2004 with the original idea of connecting students and former students in the school together for easy communication. However, just six days after the website was introduced to Harvard students, three alumni of the school sued Mark for allegedly stealing their ideas.
The lawsuit persisted until 2008 when all three people accepted compensation with Facebook shares.
The development path of the social network king
Going back to Mark’s story, in the first month, Facebook’s social network was limited to Harvard students but the rapid boom made Mark change his mind. After more than half of Harvard students registered to use Facebook, Mark decided to expand this product to a variety of other universities such as Columbia, New York, Yale …
With rapid growth, ad orders have become more visible, while Facebook has begun to show weaknesses as more and more users demand new functions. From here on, Mark thought seriously about business and eventually studied Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates, who quit Harvard, the most prestigious school on the planet.
In June 2004, Mark set up Facebook’s headquarters in a small office in Palo Alto, California. At this time, Facebook is just a small group of people with the same passion for advertising profits that are not worth it. Most people in the group consider each other as family and office to become the second home of many people.
Sensing the potential of Facebook, billionaire Peter Thiel, CEO of Paypal and Elon Musk, founder of Tesla later invested $ 500,000 for Mark. By 2005, the aid amounted to 13.7 million USD when Facebook started to grow hot. By 2006 when this social networking site launched the New Feed function, allowing users to follow their friends’ activities in real time, Facebook began its unlimited booming path.
During this period, Facebook became a fledgling force of technology village with a growing number of users. Still, Mark had no experience managing a technology company that was in such a hot growth and decided to find a professional to help.
In 2007, Mark invited Google manager Sheryl Sanberg to become CEO for Facebook, opening a new chapter for the company when switching from a passionate project to a professional business.
Entering 2009, Facebook gradually dominates the global market, especially when the smartphone boom makes mobile users on the phone increase. Each month on average, there are about 1,000 billion visits for Facebook, which has made the advertising revenue for this social network increase dramatically. The company’s headquarters are also moved to new facilities more spacious.
In 2010, Mark was honored in Time magazine for the first time when he was considered one of the most influential entrepreneurs in society. Since then, a series of politicians and celebrities join Facebook as well as have intimate contacts with the social networking site that gradually rose to the No. 1 position in the world.
Gradually, Facebook became the big guy in technology village when it acquired a lot of smaller startups like Instagram and Whatsapp. This website also became the focus of the public when supposedly impacted on the US election, disclosing customer information to third parties or becoming a major impact on the community and public opinion.
Attraction comes from personality
Despite the problems Facebook has encountered recently, Mark’s personality is what makes a lot of people respect. Despite becoming a billionaire with billions of dollars of assets, Mark still uses old cars, wears normal watches, uses cheap phones and wears extremely simple.
Even his current wife is a love from college, not a long leg or a star. Mark’s life is simply pursuing passion, doing what he likes and ignoring what people say.
Of course, the fact that he was colorblind was the cause of gray suits and alternate colors or the fact that Facebook was blue but could not deny that Mark was not burdened with the problem of wearing or the extravagant interests of rich people.
Besides, Mark and his wife also actively participated in charity activities with a series of donations for humanitarian projects. In 2014, Mark and his wife were number 1 in the world in terms of donations with nearly 1 billion USD donated to humanitarian projects.
In 2015, the couple even decided to invest 99% of the shares, equivalent to 45 billion USD at the exchange rate then to do charity.
It can be said, rich and famous are not the main factors that Mark Zuckerberg received the friendly look of people. It is the process of career advancement and a simple life in spite of the peak of glory and the sense of social responsibility that has helped Mark get the respect of both entrepreneurs and others.
