Camera has gradually become something familiar in our daily life. It appears on laptops, security cameras inside or outside the home, … Usually these cameras are designed to be hidden or to draw as little attention as possible. But there are also many unique ideas that want to make the camera or webcam more unique and impressive.
For example, the idea of a human eye-shaped webcam called Eyecam. However, at first glance this webcam can make people feel shivering rather than surprised.
This Eyecam webcam is not the camera of any home device. It is mounted on the front of the computer with the ability to see left, right, even blink, track faces during video calls.
This is the brainchild of designer and researcher Marc Teyssier and colleagues at the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory at Saarland University, Germany.
Eyecam combines robot, computer and leather made of 3D printed silicon to increase authenticity. It simulates the physiological features of the human eye, including three main parts: the skin, the musculoskeletal system (robot) and the eyeball. Eyecam is primarily designed to increase communication, Teyssier said. Like humans, Eyecam always blinks his eyes and eyelids to adapt to movement of his eyeballs.
Specifically, when Eyecam looks up, the upper eyelids widen while the lower eyelids are completely closed. Eyecam is able to autonomy and react to external stimuli, such as the user’s presence in front of it.
To mimic the “feel” of the human eye, Eyecam uses motors to move the eyes, eyelids, and eyebrows. The coordination movement between parts is controlled by an Arduino Nano board and connected to the Raspberry Pi Zero. The whole project uses open source hardware and software that makes it possible for everyone to create other creepy versions of themselves. Visit the project’s open source sharing page here .
Eyecam was born with the purpose of testing thought-provoking, to make us think more about the existence of cameras in life, we accidentally forget about them, and it also helps evaluate their behavior. How do we change when you think no one is seeing you?
Now sensors have become so popular that we cannot even sense their presence. The same goes for the webcam on the computer. It is getting smaller and smaller and is just a small circle that few people notice at the laptop’s bezel. Or the security webcam is also intelligently designed to increase camouflage.
“While webcams have the same purpose as the human eye, they cannot express, convey emotions like the human eye. Through the look, we can feel happiness, anger,” Teyssier said . bored, tired, eyes swirling around when someone is curious and looking straight to maintain focus We are familiar with the interactive cues that influence our social behavior. to the emotional aspects of the human eye on camera “.
Of course, not everyone wants to own a webcam with eyes, watching you all the time. But this can be seen as the first step towards the anthropomorphized housework robots in the future.
