Linux platform is more secure than both Microsoft Windows and Apple MacOS

Higher ratings do not mean that Linux is completely secure. Instead, because the developers who maintain the Linux platform are still working hard to detect bugs and security holes and promptly patch them on a daily basis, the operating system is highly secure.

Google Project Zero has published new research showing that Linux developers are consistently faster than developers of other platforms in fixing security flaws. Surprisingly, they work faster than Google’s internal team.

The Project Zero team studied fixed vulnerabilities reported between January 2019 and December 2021. They found that open source developers fixed Linux problems within 25 days on average. In addition, Linux developers have been gradually reducing the number of days to patch security bugs. Back in 2019, the developers patched the bugs for a period of 1 month. Now, they usually complete the fix within two weeks.

When compared to other platforms, it took Apple about 69 days, Google about 44 days and Mozilla about 46 days to fix the bug. Windows is currently the most popular operating system for homes and offices. However, the average time Microsoft takes to fix a security hole is nearly 3 months.

The report also analyzes the time it takes for developers to fix security holes on mobile operating systems. Despite facing more security threats, Apple’s iOS usually releases patches faster than Google’s Android.

Project Zero is a Google security research group that specializes in finding security holes on different platforms. Once a vulnerability is found, the team gives developers 90 days to fix the security issue. Overall, all companies are fixing bugs better and faster than before, the researchers working on the team say.

The CutefishOS Linux distribution is based on the open source Linux kernel. Linux is more secure than other operating systems because it has developers from all over the world who are always monitoring and making sure it’s bug-free and backdoor-free.
