The results of a joint investigation by the Korea Communications Commission and the Korean Ministry of Science and Technology showed that KT set the wrong speed for 24 high-speed Internet services, resulting in slower-than-expected speeds.
KT also regularly does not test the network speed when opening a new Internet service. If it does, there are countless cases where the speed doesn’t meet the minimum.
KT was the carrier with the most fines with 24,221 cases, followed by LG Uplus with 1,401 cases and SK Telecom with 155 cases. Authorities said they will fine KT a total of 500 million won (nearly 10 billion) for violations, while the other two carriers are required to rectify.
The government decided to investigate after a YouTuber accused KT of providing slower-than-advertised internet speeds earlier this year. In his video, this YouTuber asserts that KT’s 10 gigabit/s plan only has upload and download speeds of 100 megabits/s. This is not the first time he has had such a problem. The place he worked before also used a 10 gigabit package, but the download speed was only 5 gigabit.
He had to call KT customer service to fix it by restarting the modem and Internet server. Therefore, the YouTuber believes the problem may be on KT’s side and asks that the problem not recur. The carrier had to apologize to users and said the slow speed was due to an error, not intentionally.
