iPad Pro M1 is 50% more powerful than the previous generation, beating the MacBook Pro using Intel chips

Tram Ho

Apple’s M1 processor, 5nm, made its way to the first Mac computers last fall. In the recent Spring Loaded event, Apple continues to surprise when bringing the M1 chip to the latest generation iPad Pro. Apple says that this new chip will make the iPad Pro 50% more powerful than the previous generation.

It seems Apple has not exaggerated, Geekbench 5 results show that the iPad Pro M1 has a single-core performance score of 1,718 and a multi-core performance score of 7,284. The previous MacBook Air M1 also achieved similar performance scores (1,701 and 7,378 points).

The 4th generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro equipped with the A12Z chip has single-core and multi-core performance scores of 1,121 and 4,656 points, respectively. Meanwhile, the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the highest-end Intel Core i9 chip has performance scores of 1,091 and 6,845 points, respectively.

It can be seen that the performance score of the iPad Pro M1 is significantly superior to the previous generation, even higher than the MacBook Pro using Intel chips.

According to Apple’s statement, the latest 8-core GPU of the M1 processor offers 40% more performance than the A12Z Bionic. In fact, the iPad Pro M1 has an average Metal Score of 20,578, up 71% more than the iPad Pro using the A12Z chip. This Metal Score score is comparable to the graphics performance of the Mac M1 computer.

However, the iPad Pro M1s have yet to ship. So we’ll have to wait and see how these impressive performance scores translate into real-world performance.

The new iPad Pro is equipped with the same processor chip as the latest MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac. However, there are concerns that the iPadOS operating system will not be able to utilize the full power of the chip.

iPad Pro M1 will be released on May 21 here. Detailed reviews are likely to be released a few days earlier.
