iOS 9 will allow developers to make ad blockers for Safari

While Apple was more than happy to reveal plenty of new features with iOS 9, there’s still a lot to be discovered in the upcoming mobile platform.

And as the details continue to emerge, Apple’s next iOS iteration looks to be getting even more feature rich, especially for developers. One of those new features is the ability to block some ad content on Safari for iOS, which is something that some developers have mentioned briefly in the past. This feature has been part of Safari for Macs for quite some time, so its arrival for iOS was more than likely just a matter of time.

Apple calls it “content blocker” extensions, which is baked right into Safari and accessible from third-party developers. This will let developers define resources, such as scripts and images, which Safari will simply not load. As noted by 9to5Mac, it’s an interesting addition into Safari at this time, considering Apple is also debuting a new News app, which would not be affected by this ad blocking initiative.

Just recently, iOS 9 code showed that future iPhones could support 1080p front-facing cameras, so it’s likely that we’ll learn even more about Apple’s next mobile OS in the coming weeks.
