India permanently banned TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps

According to Reuters, India’s Ministry of Information Technology and Electronic Equipment announced a permanent ban on TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps. The ban was put in place by India in June 2020.

When it first introduced the ban, the Government of India gave these 59 apps the opportunity to explain their views on privacy and security compliance requirements.

Very popular apps like Byte Dance’s TikTok, Tencent’s WeChat, and Alibaba’s UC Browser were asked to answer a long list of questions.

However, the Indian media said: “The government is not satisfied with the responses and explanations of the Chinese companies. Therefore, the ban for these 59 applications will be applied and is in effect forever.

The June ban stated that 59 Chinese applications harm India’s national security, sovereignty, defense and public order. In September 2020, India continued to ban 118 other Chinese apps, including Tencent’s very popular PUBG Mobile game.

The representative of TikTok said that they are reassessing the current situation and will respond at the appropriate time.
