IBM hiring recruitment screen: Requires candidates to have 12 years of experience with Kubernetes, while the platform is only 6 years old

Tram Ho

At the end of June, IBM’s Global Technology Services posted hiring information with a “terrible” requirement: At least 12 years of working experience with Kubernetes platform. You may think that for a large technology company like IBM, the above requirement is perfectly reasonable. However, it is worth mentioning that the Kubernetes platform was only launched 6 years ago, on June 7, 2014. So, no matter how attractive the salary and the compensation, no one will surely be eligible to apply for this position.

If you do not know, Kubernetes is an open source platform, helping to expand the management of packaged applications and services, thereby facilitating the process of application deployment automation. Despite being launched 6 years ago, Kubernetes has been built on more than a decade of experience that Google has acquired, and has now become a large ecosystem with rapid growth.

IBM made many people “surprised” with their recruitment information.

Returning to the main subject, as mentioned above, Kubernetes was born in 2014 and has just turned 6 years of age more than 1 month ago. Unknown or intentional, the IBM recruiting team requires candidates to have 12 years of experience or more on the platform. Unless there is a special intention, this will make their hiring process stalemate, and also make many candidates feel scared, lose confidence every time they want to apply for a job at this company.

Nor is IBM the only case with the silly recruitment mistake mentioned above. Recently, programmer Sebastián Ramírez, who created the design, programming platform FastAPI and Typer, shared a similar experience:

The other day I saw a post like this: They require candidates to have at least 4 years of experience with FastAPI. Yes, I refused to apply, because I have just over 1.5 years of experience since the birth of this foundation. Perhaps it is time for us to reassess the point of view “the number of years of experience equals skill level”. (I mean doing it for years is not necessarily better).

Ramírez’s personal Twitter post has quickly attracted the attention of many netizens, along with unfinished recruitment stories, especially in the field of technology.

Many positions of iOS programmers require at least 7 years of experience working with Swift. How could they casually make such a request when Swift was only released in 2014?

Late last year, I “interviewed” the interview because I did not “understand” the concepts of an iOS library. But what the employer doesn’t know: I’m the one who wrote that library. Honestly, I also had a good time during the interview that day.

Employers or ridiculous of this type: Essential skills: Must be proficient in all programming languages, including those not yet born; 99 years of experience; Own all technology certificates; Must have worked for NASA, once to the moon twice, to Mars once; Positive working attitude. But when it comes to salary: Internship without pay, drink free coffee.

In 2012, we interviewed a 28-year-old designer, claiming he had 17 years of experience in website design. Then I said, “Tim Berners-Lee (who is considered the father of the world wide web) does not have all those years of experience like you.” He just innocently asked: “Who is Tim Berners-Lee?” That’s it.
