Huawei was like “drowning to get buoyed” when it learned that AMD had obtained a US license

Tram Ho

Huawei is grappling with long lines of US government bans and sourcing pressure because close partners refuse to supply Huawei components due to fear of not being able to obtain U.S. government permits. might even be the next target like Huawei always does.

Most recently, companies such as Samsung, SK Hynix, TSMC or some Chinese partners have silently stopped supplying components to Huawei, making the Chinese tech firm stand on fire.

But it seems that things are not the end for Huawei as there are still glimmering hopes, although quite late but worth waiting for.

Forrest Norrod, AMD’s Senior Vice President, recently confirmed that the company has obtained permits to supply its products to a number of US Commerce Department blacklisted companies.

The permit is almost a “travel card” that helps ensure access to blacklisted Chinese companies. Norrod asserted that the company always complied with all the regulations of the US government.

It is quite a pity that Norrod did not disclose the names of a number of companies for which AMD is authorized to operate. It is therefore not clear whether AMD can continue selling chips to Huawei.

But even if the license does not cover Huawei, AMD’s disclosure partly shows that the US is licensing business to US companies or around the world (using US technology) to continue to cooperate with blacklisted company. So sooner or later, licenses may be issued to companies that are cooperating with Huawei. This is certainly a good sign.

Many US tech giants have now started lobbying campaigns to ask the US government to reconsider restrictions on Huawei. The tech companies specifically emphasize the government ban is severely affecting American companies in many respects.
