Huawei recently filed a patent for full-screen fingerprint unlock technology. If this patent is passed, it will allow users to unlock fingerprints all over the screen, i.e. without exception the traditional normally unlocked area at the bottom.

In the patent, Huawei has outlined a number of potential applications for this technology, such as fingerprint verification for individual applications when placing a finger on icons on the screen.

In other words, users won’t need to launch an app and then place their finger on the fingerprint sensor. Instead, they just need to tap the app and launch it after scanning the fingerprint authentication.

Huawei also mentioned the ability to view, type, and reply via the SMS app without having to unlock the device. This makes the lock screen interaction more convenient. Furthermore, users will still have the option of activating sensors in a selected area of the screen while turning off the other half of the screen.

This will significantly save energy and provide better efficiency. This is because most users usually only use the bottom half of the screen.

Huawei patents have been filed in markets such as China, Europe, the US, Japan, South Korea, and India and are awaiting approval.

It is not clear whether this Huawei patent can be applied on its smartphones, but this is clearly an attractive feature and is worth the wait.
