Huawei smartphones and networking devices are no longer using US components

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, citing sources from UBS and Fomalhaut Techno Solutions , the Huawei Mate 30 Pro smartphone no longer contains any American components. This is not surprising given that Huawei is still banned from buying U.S. components.

However, this report also shows how Huawei is trying to escape depending on American components and chips.

Huawei smartphones are no longer dependent on American components

For example, before the ban, Huawei bought chips to connect to network signals from U.S. companies like Qorvo. The same chips are also provided by companies like Skyworks and Huawei's chip company, HiSilicon.

But after the ban, although the manufacturer was still able to buy chips from Qorvo, it still added supplies from Japan's Murata firm and stopped buying chips from Skyworks. Similarly, they also stopped using Broadcom's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips, and used their own chips.

It is clear that Huawei is smart enough to realize that the supply of components from the US could be a card used by US lawmakers to pressure. So the company started stockpiling components, and this helped them survive after a ban.

In addition to diversifying the supply from other countries, Huawei also started to develop its own components. It has the advantage of owning chip development company HiSilicon to design chips like Kirin or Balong modem chips. Although designed by HiSilicon, these chips are manufactured by TSMC. Last month it said it would continue to supply Huawei, despite pressure from the US government.

Even so, one part of the US that Huawei can't replace on its smartphones is Google's Android operating system and the app ecosystem revolves around it. While Android can still be installed, Huawei's new phones will no longer have Google apps like Play Store, Google Search, Gmail, Maps and more. But this will not matter much to the Chinese market, which has long banned Google.

Huawei's 5G network equipment no longer uses American components

The Wall Street Journal report also shows that Huawei is no longer dependent on US components for its telecommunications network equipment. It can now produce 5G broadcast stations without the need for American components and software.

However, the ban also has a strong impact on Huawei's manufacturing capacity. Before being banned from buying US components, Huawei could produce about 125,000 5G broadcast stations a month, but now the company can only produce about 5,000 5G stations each month.

Perhaps that's why John Suffolk, Huawei's top cybersecurity officer, said in his recent note: " All of our 5G devices are now gone. The US. We want to continue using the American components. That's good for the US industry, good for the huawie. But now it's out of our hands . "

However, Handel Jones, president of consulting firm International Business Strategies Inc., said the US purchase ban was proving ineffective: "The US supply chain independence shows that the US strategy is aimed at her. Huawei is ineffective. "

A big part of that is probably thanks to Chinese consumers, when they helped Huawei's smartphone shipments in China increased by 66% in the quarter from July to September. Meanwhile, Huawei's international market exit is still facing difficulties due to the lack of support from Google and Android.
