Huawei recently officially launched the HarmonyOS operating system, and all its smartphones will receive this new update. Business and consumer chief Richard Yu said that Huawei is updating about 100 million of its devices globally to the new operating system, including tablets like the MatePad Pro.

In theory, this should be a big change for all users of Huawei smartphones, which run an open-source version of Android with Huawei’s own services to replace Google Mobile Service.

HarmonyOS operating system will be updated as soon as possible for recent flagship smartphones, such as Mate 40, P40 and Mate 30 series. It will continue to be updated for older Huawei smartphone models later this year. Huawei said that long-standing smartphones such as Mate 9, Mate 10 or P10, P20 will receive the HarmonyOS update in early 2022.

Huawei says that HarmonyOS will have many improvements and widget support, with an interface similar to what we saw on Apple’s iOS 14 launched last year. In addition, HarmonyOS will have its own application store which is very rich and is being continuously expanded. Pairing with smart devices and wireless accessories will also be easier.

The Chinese giant first introduced the HarmonyOS operating system in 2019, and the first device to launch with this operating system was a TV. HarmonyOS will not only be an operating system, but will become an ecosystem used on many different smart devices.

Although Huawei says that HarmonyOS is a brand new operating system. But there are many reports that have proven that HarmonyOS has many similarities with the open source version of Android. Ars Technica has studied this operating system deeply, and claims that HarmonyOS is still just Android. Meanwhile, Huawei did not have any response or comment.
