Huawei acknowledged HongMeng OS will not be used on smartphones, still continue to use Android

HongMeng OS operating system is developed by Huawei based on the open source Android platform. This is considered a replacement if Huawei is not allowed to use the Android operating system anymore. However, according to the latest report, it seems that Huawei will change its strategy.

Catherine Chen, senior vice president of Huawei, said that the upcoming HongMeng OS will not be used on smartphones. And Huawei plans to continue using Google’s Android operating system on its upcoming smartphones.

Ms. Chen added that HongMeng OS will be used in industrial systems and data centers. This operating system is also very safe and lighter because there are fewer lines of code than Android on smartphones.

In an earlier interview, Huawei’s founder and CEO also said that HongMeng OS will be used on a variety of devices including routers, switches, computers and data centers. He did not mention that the operating system will be available on Huawei smartphones.

However HongMeng OS is still being tested on smartphones. It seems that Huawei has changed its strategy, after President Donald Trump announced that US companies could continue doing business with Huawei under certain conditions. That means Huawei can continue to use the latest version of Android operating system on its smartphones.
