Samsung is currently leading the foldable phone market with the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip product lines. Other brands, including Motorola, Oppo, Vivo and Huawei have also had limited success.

However, Apple is still out of this race. Earlier this year, well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that the chances of Apple producing a foldable iPhone before 2025 were very low.

It seems that Apple wants to wait for the related technologies to reach some degree of maturity before making the leap.

Can’t wait, “KJMX” – Chinese YouTuber and his engineer friend decided to make their own folding iPhone. After 200 days of work and thousands of yuan, the couple built the world’s first foldable iPhone.

KJMX’s original goal was to keep as many original parts as possible on the iPhone – and the first problem he and his friend encountered was how to fold an iPhone.

After days of testing with several destroyed iPhone screens – they succeeded in doing this.

Next comes the search for a suitable hinge. They originally intended to take the hinge from the Galaxy Z Flip – but quickly realized that it was not the right solution. The duo ended up making a hinge from the Motorola Razr.

In order for all the components of the iPhone to be in a shell designed for folding, the duo had to reverse the position of some of the internal components.

They removed the speakerphone, wireless charging… and accepted the installation of a 1,000 mAh battery – reducing the battery capacity of the iPhone. They must also install a custom version of iOS that has some optimizations for foldable panels.

The entire process of turning the aforementioned iPhone into a foldable took more than 200 days of labor and thousands of yuan. And while their final product is far from usable, the effort by KJMX and his engineer friend is commendable.
