Google will enable two-factor authentication by default for hundreds of millions of accounts later this year

Tram Ho

In May, Google announced plans to enable two-factor authentication by default to enhance security for many accounts. Now that Google is reminding us again of that plan, the company says it will default to enabling two-step support for an additional 150 million accounts by the end of the year.

In 2018, Google said that only 10% of their active accounts used two-step authentication. Google has pushed and encouraged people to turn on the setting ever since. Google also requires more than 2 million YouTube creators to turn on two-factor authentication to protect their channels from hijacking. Google says it has partnered with organizations to provide more than 10,000 hardware security keys each year. Their push has made the technology available on almost everyone’s smartphone, be it Android or iOS.

As Google says, having a second form of authentication for login attempts greatly reduces the chances of an attacker getting access. There are different ways to add two-step authentication, but most services rely on codes sent via SMS or generated by a paired app like Google Authenticator or Authy. However, Google has focused mainly on device reminders. When you sign in to Google, the system will ask you to check your phone for a button. You can verify the credentials and that’s it.

Google acknowledges that today’s two-step authentication options aren’t ideal for everyone. They won’t enable it for accounts that don’t have any backup options, for example, a verified phone number or a verification code generator. Google will continue to research methods that can help us stay away from passwords, which Microsoft is also very interested in.
