Google scientists created a 4-legged robot capable of self-learning without help

There’s a robot with the ability to walk like a Bambi deer – it sounds normal, but really impressive!

Researchers at Google, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of Berkeley recently published a research paper detailing how they successfully developed an AI-capable robot. to teach her how to walk.

This robot uses an AI called ” deep reinforcement learning “. This AI combines many elements from two different types of AI, ” deep learning ” and ” reinforcement learning “. With intensive learning, an algorithm will learn how to perform a task through a trial-and-error process, in which it will be rewarded or penalized depending on the level of the task assigned. Deep learning allows systems to process and evaluate raw data imported from their surroundings.

Normally, tests of enhanced algorithms are conducted inside simulated computer environments, so this achievement of the researchers marked a new step when conducting tests right in the posture. real world.

The researchers initially placed the robot on a flat surface, where it found a way to travel within 1.5 hours. Next, they tried it on some harder surfaces – a soft and elastic mattress, and a floor mat with lots of cracks. The robot took 5.5 hours to figure out how to go back and forth on the mattress, while it only took 4.5 hours to figure out how to walk on the floor mat.

Of course, researchers don’t completely “give experiments” to “self-mobilizing” robots. They still have to intervene when the robot accidentally leaves the area it needs to learn to go, and when it falls off that area – even though they’ve found a way to tweak its algorithm to prevent the robot from going out. study area. Besides helping the robot occasionally, the researchers tweaked its algorithm to prevent it from leaving its position and help it stand up when it fell.

The 4-legged robot learns to learn how to walk by itself Researcher Jie Tan said developing robots capable of walking effectively is the future of robotics. “A lot of places are built for people, and we all have legs to walk … If a robot can’t use its feet, they can’t walk around in the human world,” he said.
