“Google of China” launches electric car with self-driving technology, has more than 1,000 orders

Chinese giant Baidu, known for its Google-like search engine, recently launched a limited edition electric car with self-driving technology, priced at $55,000.

Chinese search engine Baidu recently launched a limited edition electric car equipped with an autopilot feature. The car, called Robo 01 Lunar Edition, is priced at 399,000 yuan ($55,300). Baidu’s electric vehicle joint venture has received more than 1,000 orders and is expanding to 1,000 more, with deliveries expected next year.

The electric vehicle was displayed at an event in Shanghai on Thursday and attracted more than 300 people to the event, including the media.

Jidu Auto, Baidu’s joint venture with Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, developed and manufactured the Robo 01 Lunar Edition.

Jidu has been approaching potential customers since late September about purchasing Robo-01. After receiving 1,000 pre-orders, Jidu decided to offer more of this model for consumers to buy in limited quantities.

The Robo-01 is bundled with semiconductors made by US suppliers Qualcomm and Nvidia that will enhance self-driving performance, said Jidu CEO Xia Yiping. The company says the limited-edition electric vehicle will receive free charging and maintenance for the life of the vehicle.

Also in 2022, the company made a strong impression on consumers when it launched an automatic robotaxi called Apollo RT6 with a price of re. The vehicle comes with a removable steering wheel as a driver is no longer required.

This steering wheelless design also allows more space to fit additional seats or other extras, even game consoles or vending machines. Apollo RT6, is an electric vehicle with a production cost of 250,000 yuan (about 37,313) without depending on a third-party manufacturer.
