Google CEO asserts: AI is more influential than the invention of fire, the Internet and electricity

The artificial intelligence revolution has a “deeper” impact than the invention of electricity, the internet and even fire, is what Google CEO Sundar Pichai remarked to the BBC’s media editor. , Amol Rajan in an interview.

The advancement of artificial intelligence is still at a very early stage, but I consider it the most profound technology that mankind has ever developed and continue to develop, and we must make sure to evolve in a way that we can exploit for the benefit of society,” Pichai said.

“But I expect it to play an important role in every aspect of our lives. You know, it could be healthcare, it could be education, it could be the way we produce things and the way we take in information. And so I see it as a very profound technology. If you think about fire, electricity or the internet, AI is like that, but I think it’s deeper , Pichai said.

Whether you agree with Pichai or not, he’s clearly right about one thing: Whatever happens to AI, it needs to be for the good of society.

As the interview revolved around the national security implications of AI – the stuff science fiction uses to terrify us – Pichai remains optimistic that society will use the technology for good.

“I think there will definitely be a competitive aspect. There will be national security aspects to it. And those are all important questions. But I draw a parallel, like with climate change, you won’t achieve security on a unilateral basis, because the world is connected,” Pichai said.

“And so, to really deal with, you know, peaceful coexistence with AI, again you’re going to need global frameworks and structures. And everyone will be affected in the same way, just like the climate. And I think that’s what will draw people together,” Pichai continued.

“Nothing is given for free. We have to get there, but I think as the world becomes more prosperous, when there is economic growth, everyone wants the same thing , Pichai said . “To some extent, people want to do well, they want peace. And so you build on those ideals and connect everywhere.”

Human history may not agree with Pichai, but who knows the future? This is not the first time Pichai has compared the coming AI revolution to the most important inventions in human history. Pichai made a similar comment in February 2018.

It’s not yet known if Pinchai is right about living peacefully with AI, but hopefully. If Pichai were wrong, we would have a terrible world.
