Galaxy S9 launched four years ago still getting the latest Android security updates

Currently, it is not Google but Samsung that is the “unknown” in updating Android. Samsung is offering the longest software update cycle in the Android market, and now the Korean company is even doing something they never promised before.

Samsung has started rolling out the March 2022 security update for the Galaxy S9 series launched in March 2018, which is four years old.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ were not part of Samsung’s original plan when they announced four years of security updates for devices released in 2019 or later. Even these S9s are receiving the update much earlier than some of the newer smartphone models.

The March 2022 update for the Galaxy S9 series has firmware G96xFXXUHFVB4. This update fixes more than 50 security vulnerabilities. Currently, the update is rolling out in Germany but will roll out globally soon.

It’s great that Samsung can execute even better its update plan. This move is sure to please longtime Samsung users and help new users confidently use their devices for years to come.

This is not the first time Samsung has surprised users with the update. In December of last year, the Galaxy S8 that was then nearly 5 years old also received a security update.
