From now on, the Goo.gl reducer is officially declared dead

Tram Ho

It has been more than a year since Google announced the Google URL Shortener link shortening (goo.gl) and now after March 30, Google has officially declared the service.

Now, you will not be able to create new shortened links or see the shortened links you have ever created. Even if you sign in to your Google account on the service page, you will only receive an error message.

On the home page of the service, you will see the yellow notification line, on March 30, 2019 will be the time to completely stop this service. Any shortened links that users create will still be redirected to the landing page.

However, users including both anonymous and Google accounts will not be able to create new shortened links, manage shortened links created, …

Previously, Google began to stop supporting the feature of shortened links on goo.gl since March 30, 2018, applicable to anonymous users without a Google account. Next to April 13, 2018, Google officially blocked Google users from creating new shortened links but still allowed to manage the created links.

And on March 30, Google has removed the shortened link management page. Users who want to keep the shortened links created will have to download the link file in .csv format but of course Google no longer supports downloading.

Currently, Google is directing users to switch to Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL), a completely new service that allows creation of smart URLs that can be shared via Android, iOS or web applications.

The Google URL Shortener link shortener (goo.gl) was first released in December 2009 and was initially used in conjunction with the Google Toolbar and Feedburner. However, the shortened link demand has been severely reduced in the last few years and forced Google to consider the solution of this service death because there are no customers left.

If you still want to use shortened link services, you can refer to other existing services like Bit.ly or Ow.ly.
