Former President Donald Trump shuts down a blog that competes with Facebook and Twitter

Yesterday, CNBC reported that former President Donald Trump’s blog has been shut down, less than a month after its launch. The blog “From the Desk of Donald J. Trump” launched on May 4, after the former US President was banned by Facebook and Twitter earlier this year. Trump’s senior aide Jason Miller confirmed to CNBC that the blog will be closed permanently. The blog has been removed from Mr. Trump’s website, while older posts are kept in a separate section of the site.

Trump was banned by Facebook and Twitter in January 2021, after the riot at the Capitol and Trump’s account is believed to have started this riot. Immediately after the ban, Mr. Trump announced that he would create a new social networking platform to replace Facebook and Twitter.

On Facebook and Twitter before, the former US President’s account has attracted a lot of followers. However, Mr. Trump’s new blog has received little attention. According to NBC News, Trump’s blog only achieved a total of 212,000 interactions in the whole of May 2021. While just one previous post by Trump on Facebook or Twitter also had millions of interactions.
