Fix the error of AAE-1 cable before the Lunar New Year 2023, 2 routes AAG and APG do not have a fix schedule

Of the three international undersea cable routes that are having problems, the AAE-1 route has just had a repair schedule, with the expected time to fix the fault on the S1H segment as tomorrow, January 14.

In addition to the land cable routes, most of the Internet connection capacity from Vietnam to the world is currently via 5 international undersea fiber optic lines including APG, AAG, AAE-1, SMW3 and IA (also known as Lien A). However, in 2022, 3 undersea cable routes AAG, AAE-1 and APG respectively have encountered problems and currently the errors have not been fixed, affecting the quality of service that carriers in Vietnam have to offer.

In particular, AAG encountered problems in February 2022 and June 2022 on branch cables connecting to Hong Kong (China) and Singapore. AAE-1 encountered a source detection error at the end of November 2022 on the S1H segment of the cable line. In operation since July 2017, AAE-1 plays the role of improving connection quality towards Europe and the Middle East as well as providing additional capacity and redundancy towards connection to Hong Kong (China). Country), Singapore.

Most recently, on the morning of December 26, 2022, the APG international undersea cable had a problem. This time, the problem occurred on the S6 segment near Hong Kong (China). APG has a length of 10,400 km, located underground in the Pacific Ocean, capable of providing a maximum bandwidth of up to 54 Tbps. This cable route is invested by Vietnamese carriers VNPT, Viettel, FPT, and CMC and is considered a cable route that contributes to bringing a stable transmission line with a larger capacity for Internet users in Vietnam.

In fact, right after detecting the undersea cable problems, ISPs in Vietnam have urgently implemented backup plans, transferring international connection traffic to IA and SMW3 undersea cables as well as cable routes. other mainland.

For example, with NetNam, because the unit focuses on serving institutional and business customers, the quality requirements are mainly related to low latency, not too large bandwidth. Therefore, the option is to diversify the international and domestic connection network, monitor and implement timely response scenarios when there is a breakdown of any undersea cable line. “NetNam currently has direct international connections at hubs in Hong Kong and Singapore, as well as connections with all domestic carriers, to ensure quality and response flexibility,” the representative said. This network operator shares more.

In the new information shared with VietNamNet , a representative of an Internet service provider (ISP) in Vietnam said that there is now a schedule to repair and fix the problem that occurred at the end of November 2022 on the cable line. sea AAE-1. Accordingly, it is expected that the error on the S1H segment connecting to Singapore will be fixed on January 14, 2023.

Meanwhile, network operators in Vietnam have not yet received a notice from the cable route management unit about the plan to handle and fix problems on two other undersea cable lines, AAG and APG.

Thus, it is expected that only AAE-1 undersea cable will be repaired and restored before the Lunar New Year 2023. However, the repair of AAE-1 will partly help reduce pressure. force for network operators in ensuring the quality of international Internet services for customers.

Previously, in Directive 22 dated December 23, 2022 on strengthening measures to ensure a joyful, healthy, safe and thrifty Lunar New Year, the Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Information and Communications to Maintain coordination with ministries, branches and localities to ensure that the communication needs of agencies, organizations, businesses and people are met during the Tet holiday as well as to ensure smooth and safe operation. Stable connection infrastructure, Internet transit…

Concerned that the implementation of the above task will be difficult because the undersea cable lines have problems right around the time of Tet, the representative of the Vietnam Internet Association (VIA) believes that: “The network operators are fully capable. to meet the requirements of quality and stability of communication and Internet connection during Tet holiday”.

Talking about improving the quality of international Internet connections in the long term, VIA vice president said that Vietnam’s Internet growth rate is still high, the demand for international bandwidth is increasing rapidly, so every home All networks have strategies to expand, supplement and deploy new international cable routes.

In terms of quantity and capacity of undersea fiber optic cables, we are still far behind Malaysia and Thailand. Therefore, VIA representative hopes that in the coming time, state management agencies together with telecommunications businesses will have strategies to ensure Vietnam’s international connection infrastructure to meet the development of the Internet. in the country, as well as towards the possibility that Vietnam can become a data hub of the region.
