Fire burns in the middle of the ocean, the scene is as majestic as in a sci-fi movie

A gas leak from an underwater pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico led to a massive fire above the ocean’s surface yesterday, Reuters reported. The fire that burned west of Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula was extinguished a few hours later, the oil company Pemex said. However, Pemex representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Flames rose from the bottom of the sea near the Ku Maloob Zaap oil field, an offshore drilling rig operated by oil and gas company Pemex, after an underwater pipeline burst early in the morning. According to a company statement, a gas leak caused a blaze about 150 meters high at 5:15 a.m. local time. The fire took more than 5 hours to extinguish and was completely extinguished by 10:30 a.m. with no injuries or major impact on production.

Twitter user Manuel Lopez San Martin shared a video of the fire, which included footage of boats working to put out the fire.

The fire started in an underwater pipeline connected to a platform at Pemex’s Ku Maloob Zaap oil development, people familiar with the matter told Reuters . A source said workers controlled the fire with nitrogen gas. It is known that no one was injured.

A shared incident report also said: “Machinery and turbines of the operating production facilities of the Ku Maloob Zaap oil field have been affected by an electromagnetic storm and heavy rain.” Pemex representatives say they will investigate what led to the incident.
