Features advertised but not available on iOS 15

Tram Ho

As usual, iOS 15 has launched without all the features as Apple introduced at the developer event in June, WWDC 2021.

Many features are still being worked on and may only be available in iOS 15.1, 15.2 and beyond. Here are the features that are currently not available on iOS 15 that users may have to wait until the end of this year or early next year.

SharePlay

This is an important function of FaceTime, allowing users to chat and share the screen they are watching such as TV, music, wallpaper. SharePlay was tested in the beta stage of iOS 15 but encountered an error and Apple said it had to postpone the inclusion of this function.

SharePlay allows friends to watch movies together, but not yet on iOS 15.

Apple is currently still testing SharePlay again with the scheduled roll-out in iOS 15.1, iPadOS 15.1, and tvOS 15.1.

Digital Legacy

Digital Legacy is a feature that leaves survivors or their families with access to decedent data. Users can set up a contact list to give others access to their Apple ID and personal information such as photos after death.

Currently, if someone dies with an iPhone, iPad or Mac locked, it is very difficult to access the device without the Digital Legacy feature.

Unfortunately, this feature has never been tested and it is not clear when Apple will launch it.

Number key

The digital keys of the HomeKit smart home platform will now be stored directly in the Wallet wallet and users can open the door of the house without downloading a third-party application. HomeKit accessory makers will have to embed the feature in order for Apple to introduce it in iOS 15.

The iPhone Wallet will now integrate a lot of digitized personal information.

Similarly, digital IDs and digital driver’s licenses can now also be stored in the Wallet app. But currently, only a few states in the US support this type of digital driver’s license recognition.

The expected timeline for the full rollout of these features is currently unknown, but Apple is actively working with the US Transportation Security Administration to enable the use of digital IDs at airports.

Access permission report

App Privacy Report is a function that allows users to know what applications use permissions to grant access to and what information has been obtained. This functionality is now partially logged in the Record App Activity with a maximum of 7 days recorded.

The app access permission report will be summarized and partially recorded in the Record App Activity.

Fully functional privacy reporting will only be available later this year. Currently, users can manually download .json files to read raw data if they have understanding of data structures.

Siri integration

Apple is currently allowing HomeKit smart home accessory makers to integrate Siri functionality into devices running iOS 15. The problem is that manufacturers also need time to integrate and be compatible with all the devices. devices running iOS 15 and not yet available immediately.

Siri integration will allow any HomeKit device to send messages, set timers, contact family members, control the device, and more.

Note that to use Siri through a third-party device, users need an intermediary device such as the HomePod mini smart speaker.

Universal Control

As a feature that connects iPadOS 15‌ and ‌macOS Monterey‌, Universal Control allows users to use a single input device such as a mouse or keyboard to control multiple devices such as a Mac or iPad at the same time.

Universal Control allows operation on multiple Apple devices with just one mouse or keyboard.

Universal Control was never put to the test, nor was it included in iPadOS 15 when Apple promised a late fall release. Because macOS Monterey‌ won’t be out until the end of the year, it’s pretty likely that Universal Control will miss out on iFans right now.

Find lost AirPods

Right before G released iOS 15, Apple suddenly announced that Find My will not support AirPods until the end of autumn.

The Find My feature is designed to work with AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, allowing maps to be used to locate lost headphones.
