Facing with Zoom, Facebook launched Messenger Rooms, allowing unlimited video calls with 50 people at the same time

Tram Ho

It seems the crazy growth of the video telephony application Zoom has caused Facebook to be hot-eyed when deciding to launch its answer with Messenger Rooms, allowing simultaneous video calls to 50 people, unlimited time.

Currently, Facebook Messenger already has a video calling function, but it not only limits the number of participants in the call, but also requires a Facebook account to use it.

With the new Messenger Rooms feature, this has changed. First you can hold a video call for 50 participants and they don’t need a Facebook account – they can join the call through a link you create. With just one click, they can join this call – similar to Zoom. More importantly, Messenger Rooms will have no time limits.

If you enter the Room through the Messenger app, you can use AR effects and new features like changing the background and lighting according to your emotions.

The room creator can choose who will see the meeting and join it, and can remove anyone from the call at any time, as well as lock the call back if you do not want the person to Any other participants. Of course, you can also leave the call whenever you want. Calls made by you on Rooms through the Facebook Group will default to all members of that Group.

However, the Rooms feature is not end-to-end encrypted either, because “there are significant challenges” in providing encryption for such a large number of participants. However, Facebook says it is actively developing this in the future.

Meanwhile, the content of calls on Rooms is encrypted between participants and the Facebook server, and is “located in a handful of countries with strict laws.” The company also promises not to watch or eavesdrop on your videos or calls.

This week, Messenger Rooms will be rolled out in several countries, and will expand globally “in the coming weeks.”
