Facebook just announced at the Oculus event that the company is developing a new virtual reality platform called Horizon. Basically this virtual reality social network will give users an experience like an online role-playing game (MMO) in the virtual world created by Facebook.
This social network is described like role-playing games.
Horizon is an “open world” that links all users everywhere, users will create accounts as characters (like The Sims game). Characters can meet, play games and build their own environment. This social network supports two virtual reality devices from Facebook, Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift.
According to Facebook, users can play games and participate in events built by Facebook, or can build and organize their own activities. Here is the promotional video played by Facebook at the last event:
Facebook has long wanted to turn its social network into a virtual world, where you and your friends can meet, chat or interact like in real life. The idea was first introduced at Oculus Connect in October 2017, called Spaces – but was closed down.
The new social network is expected to be launched in 2020, Facebook is running a beta program and developing 3D virtual reality glasses. Currently, Facebook has not provided any information on the new Horizon virtual reality social network, such as whether it is connected to a Facebook account or not, how to interact with friends via virtual reality.
Virtual reality and augmented reality are considered the key for Facebook to dominate the technology era in the next 10 years. That’s why it offers ideas far ahead of competitors, such as how users experience and think in virtual reality environments. This is just the first step, but really important.
