Facebook will introduce “Orion” smart glasses in 2023 – 2025 to replace phones

A new bulletin posted today reveals a few more details about Facebook’s “Orion” project, along with an expected launch time for the product.

According to CNBC, Facebook’s smart glass has an internal code name “Orion”, named after the hunting god in Greek mythology. This project was developed by Facebook Reality Labs in Redmond, Washington.

The world’s number one social network wants its device to replace smartphones, with a small screen that allows users to make calls, stream live with friends, and display other information.

Users will enter data through a voice assistant also developed by this group. Facebook also tested a “ring device” code-named “Agios”, built in with a motion sensor to allow users to perform other input methods besides voice.

The report also said that Facebook currently has difficulty shrinking the device to a form factor that consumers may find attractive. It also cooperates with Luxottica, which owns many brands of eyeglasses, to support the development of smart glasses.

Another information from The Information is that Facebook recently partnered with Ray-Ban to implement a short-term project called “Stella”, whose main purpose is to compete with Snapchat’s Spectacles. The glasses will also have voice assistants and an accompanying mobile app.

It is known that Facebook has set a timeline from 2023 to 2025 as the deadline to launch smart glasses for consumers, but nothing confirmed this information at all. Just knowing that Zuckerberg has directed Facebook hardware leader Andrew Bosworth gives priority to developing its smart glasses.

However, the most interesting point in the new news mentioned above is how Facebook wants to replace smartphones with its smart glasses. In many ways, this new form factor gives the social networking company an opportunity to control A to Z hardware and software platforms without being dependent on Android or iOS.

However, the ambition to create a unique product that handles both handling and connectivity will delay Facebook’s efforts. Recent rumors suggest that Apple’s smart glass product will be tied to the iPhone, just like the first-generation Apple Watch. And yet, Microsoft’s HoloLens and Magic Leap One products are standalone devices, but they’re incredibly bulky to wear on their heads.

Contrary to rumors about Apple, Microsoft and now Facebook’s smart glasses, Google’s smart glass project seems to be much more private. Google’s AR & VR division seems to work fairly quietly, most of the products they are developing are for mobile AR and build the foundation for future services.
