Facebook offers a “ ridiculous but convincing ” salary reduction policy

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company could adjust employee salaries if they leave Silicon Valley, CNBC reported.

The wage adjustment will apply to remote workers who are seeking new accommodation in areas where renting or buying housing is cheaper than in Silicon Valley, one of the areas with cost of living. The most expensive in the US.

“We will adjust the salary according to your position at that time,” Zuckerberg said. “There will be serious differences in treatment for people who are dishonest about this.”

The payroll adjustment comes after Facebook’s CEO predicts that 50% of the company could work remotely, over the next 5 to 10 years. Zuckerberg also stated that Facebook will “actively” enhance remote recruiting to diversify its company’s talent.

“When you only recruit people who live in a small number of big cities or are willing to move there, that would cut off the opportunities of so many other people, living in different communities, different platforms or may have different views, “ he said.

The social networking giant has joined a list of tech companies – including Twitter – considering allowing employees to work remotely after the pandemic.

The coronavirus pandemic has reshaped not only Facebook but the technology industry as a whole. In a survey of thousands of tech workers in the Bay Area, two out of three said they would consider working remotely if the company allowed and provided the opportunity.

“Facebook will become the most advanced company working from afar, at our scale,” Zuckerberg said.
