Facebook cheats when it doesn’t use facial recognition technology anymore, but parent company Meta will continue to use it

Recently, social network Facebook announced that it will no longer use facial recognition technologies on its platform. But the newly formed parent company Meta says that this commitment does not apply to metaverse virtual universe products.
To the delight of privacy advocates, Facebook announced it would no longer use facial recognition and delete collected facial data from more than 1 billion users. This technology includes the DeepFace algorithm, which is used to identify people in a photo in order to tag that person in the photo.
As reported by Recode, Facebook’s parent company Meta confirmed that the above commitment does not apply to the metaverse virtual universe.
“We believe this technology has the potential to grow in the future, to help maintain control, privacy and transparency,” said a Meta representative . We will continue to explore and find ways to apply to platforms in the future, to best serve the needs of users.”
Meta will continue to use its biometric tools as it develops the metaverse virtual universe. That includes the DeepFace algorithm, an artificial intelligence engine that helps match facial patterns in Facebook’s system with a user’s photo.
Meta has yet to reveal exactly what it will do with its facial recognition tool, but the company says it will clearly notify users when there are new changes.
“We will disclose the intended use of any technology. Everyone can know their own systems and personal data. That’s how we work with our responsibility framework,” said a Meta representative.
