According to a lawsuit obtained by Business Insider, Candie Frazier accuses TikTok and its parent company ByteDance of exposing them to unusually dangerous work practices. Frazier’s attorney said TikTok retaliated against its employee by barring her from returning to work, a day after suing.

The lawsuit alleges that Frazier’s job requires her to spend 12 hours a day viewing offensive content. While working, Frazier witnessed “thousands of extremely violent and extreme acts”, including rape of children, dismemberment of animals, sexual assault, shootings…

Due to constant exposure to high-intensity toxic content, Frazier suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, insecurity, and depression. She also had nightmares and kept thinking about the videos she watched as she tried to fall asleep.

Despite being aware of the impact of content management, TikTok and ByteDance are said to not adopt industry-wide safety standards such as disabling sound, minimizing or dimming sensitive content. . The lawsuit also alleges that the two companies failed to provide adequate mental health support.

Content administrators watch from 3 to 10 videos at a time and spend no more than 25 seconds on each video because of the large volume, according to the lawsuit. ByteDance and TikTok may monitor content governance through a proprietary video review program to verify whether they are in compliance with time. The company may delay nonpayment of wages if an employee is overtimed.

TikTok declined to comment on the lawsuit but insists the platform strives to provide a caring environment for employees and contractors.

Frazier was recruited by Telus International, a content management contractor for TikTok. She has been a first-level content administrator since January 2018.

Frazier is seeking compensation for her and other US content administrators who were exposed to unpleasant photos and videos on TikTok and has requested TikTok and ByteDance to support them and provide them with psychological treatment.

Administrators having psychological problems at work are a big problem at social networking platforms. In 2020, Facebook paid $52 million to settle a lawsuit against administrators diagnosed with PSTD.
